SU Celebrates African American History Month With a Screening of the Documentary 'Talking Black in America'
SALISBURY, MD---黑料网’s African American History Month celebration culminates with a screening of the 2017 documentary Talking Black in America 6 p.m. Thursday, February 28, in Fulton Hall Room 111.
The film chronicles the impact of African American English on U.S. language and culture.
“The status of African American speech has been controversial for more than a half-century now, suffering from persistent public misunderstanding, linguistic profiling and language-based discrimination,” said Walt Wolfram, the film’s executive producer. “We wanted to address that and, on a fundamental level, make clear that understanding African American speech is absolutely critical to understanding the way we talk today.”
An SU faculty panel discussion follows.
Sponsored by SU Libraries and the African American History Month Committee, admission is free and the public is invited. For more information call 410-548-3836 or visit the SU website.
