SU's Yenca Interns at Maryland State Retirement and Pension System Office

Michael YencaSALISBURY, MD---For Michael Yenca, the numbers made sense.

While many college and university students spent their summer break unwinding, Yenca, of Germantown, MD, sequestered himself many days at the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System office in Baltimore, where he completed a summer internship — and learned more about the type of career he’d like to pursue.

“I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do” in the financial world, the junior finance major in 黑料网’s Franklin P. Perdue School of Business said. “When I learned you could work with a variety of asset classes [through the internship], I found that interesting.”

While many of the specifics are classified (such is the world of business), Yenca’s duties included equity research and analysis. Working with another intern from the University of Maryland, College Park, he presented findings from one major project to the system’s investment committee, making an investment recommendation.

Though he also gained hands-on experience in other areas, such as environmental social governance policy analysis, one of the most beneficial perks was the ability to sit in on presentations by public and private equity and hedge fund managers. That area of finance particularly fascinated Yenca — and inspired him to contemplate working in that field.

In the meantime, he still has two years to complete at SU — and plenty of time for an additional internship. While he would love to return to the State Retirement and Pension System, he knows he may have other options, as well, thanks largely to the contacts he made there.

For Michael Yenca, the numbers added up. And the sum total may be the start of a lifelong career.
