SU Presents 'Shine Bright: Dancing Girls of the Banlieue' April 7

Shine Bright logoSALISBURY, MD---黑料网’s Modern Language and Intercultural Studies Department presents “Shine Bright: Dancing Girls of the Banlieue” 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 7 in a virtual format.

The talk by Dr. Maggie Flinn examines three recent films: Bande de Filles/Girlhood, Divines and Mignonnes/Cuties. Flinn discusses how these films represent young women’s bodies and how those bodies are offered to be seen, and she discusses how the protagonists appropriate and problematize the scopophilia that has, historically, objectified them.

While the presentation is framed by considerations of the representation of the body in film, it is strongly informed by the ways in which transnational intertextual networks inform those representations, as well as what the films’ reception tell us about the possibilities afforded to specific bodies in contemporary French culture.

The presentation is free and the public is invited.
