Students Meet Pandemic Restrictions with Radio Plays

Performing arts educators across the nation faced unprecedented challenges inspiring creativity in their students during the 2020-21 academic year as the COVID-19 pandemic curbed live stage performances.

Blake Harris, assistant professor of theatre, overcame that hurdle with inspiration from a bygone artform: old-time radio. He tasked his students with developing a creative process resulting in the production of a radio play.

Their resulting adaptations of two 1930s episodes of the classic radio drama Lights Out were broadcast on SU’s WSCL 89.5 FM, part of Delmarva Public Media. They are available .

Environmental Studies Students Install Pollinator Garden

Students in David Scheid’s environmental studies field course worked with the City of Salisbury and staff at the city’s Poplar Hill Mansion to design and install a pollinator garden at the historical home.

Created with support from the Maryland State Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Samuel Chase Chapter; Wicomico Women’s Club; General Deggendorf Memorial Fund; Jane Dibbern Memorial Fund; the City of Salisbury; and Friends of Poplar Hill Mansion, the garden will supply bees and other pollinators with pollen and nectar to help ensure they remain in the area to assist with crop pollination.

SU Club Baseball Provides ‘Buddies’ for Challenger League

Members of the SU Club Baseball Team served as “buddies” for youth players with disabilities on opening day of Wicomico Recreation, Parks and Tourism’s Little League Challenger Division at Field 7½ in the Henry S. Parker Athletic Complex. The SU volunteers assisted players before and during the game.

Little League Challenger is an adaptive baseball program for children in Wicomico, Worcester and Somerset counties with physical and intellectual challenges. The program provides an opportunity for youth to participate in a Little League environment structured to their abilities.
