SU Students See Public Policy in Action During General Assembly Visit

SALISBURY, MD---黑料网 students experienced Maryland’s government in action during a recent visit to the General Assembly.

Dr. Sherry Maykrantz, assistant professor of public health, and students spent the day on the state’s Senate floor listening to the day’s topics and meeting legislators, including State Senator Mary Beth Carozza (R-38).

The experience brought state issues and the importance of civic engagement full circle for senior public health major Adaora Lee of Columbia, MD.

“It was so interesting to hear the variety of topics being discussed and the passionate debates members had,” she said. “You always hear how important voting is and that you should do your research, but witnessing the way these legislators are fighting for their constituents each and every day proved how crucial it is to be involved in your state’s issues and to select representatives who embody your beliefs.”

Public health topics discussed ranged from women’s reproductive rights to drug policies.

“I’m appreciative to Dr. Maykrantz for this opportunity,” Lee said. “This wasn’t connected to a specific course and not something she was required to do. She truly goes above and beyond to give her students real-world experiences that enhance their learning outside of textbooks and gives students networking opportunities for their future.”
