'American Negro Spirituals' Airs on WSDL September 15

SALISBURY, MD---Created in the fields and plantation houses of the old South, the spiritual allowed slaves to secretly communicate through singing.

Now Dr. Andrew Sharma, faculty in 黑料网’s Communication Arts Department, is doing his part to make sure this historic art form does not vanish from the American culture. Sharma recently produced American Negro Spirituals, an hour-long radio program featuring the work of the American Spiritual Ensemble. The show airs 8 p.m. Monday, September 15, on WSDL 90.7 FM.

The program includes narration, interviews and samples of the ensemble’s music from recordings and impromptu studio sessions. The show was made possible, in part, by grants from SU’s Charles R. and Martha N. Fulton School of Liberal Arts, the Salisbury Wicomico Arts Council, the Maryland State Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
