Author, Illustrator Collier Speaks at SU February 11

SALISBURY, MD---Award-winning children’s author and illustrator Bryan Collier inaugurates the Eastern Shore Children’s Literature Series with a talk 5 p.m. Wednesday, February 11, in the Teacher Education and Technology Center building, Room 226.

Collier, a native of Pocomoke City, MD, is a nationally celebrated artist and illustrator, and has received both the Caldecott Honor and the Coretta Scott King Award. His most recent picture book is Barack Obama: Son of Promise, Child of Hope.

As a teenager he began to develop a unique style of painting that incorporated both watercolors and collage. Collier writes about his work, "Collage is more than just an art style,” he said. “Collage is all about bringing different elements together. Once you form a sensibility about connection, how different elements relate to each other, you deepen your understanding of yourself and others."

Collier’s past books include Martin’s Big Words, Freedom River and Visiting Langston.

Collier’s talk, part of 黑料网’s celebration of Africa-American History Month, is followed by a reception and book signing. Sponsored by the Samuel W. and Marilyn C. Seidel School of Education and Professional Studies, the event is free and the public is invited.
